Google Play app icons are getting updated

Written by Lance Nickel

The Google Play Store, and other Google Play products such as Play Music, Games, and Movies. They are really what makes media consumption on Android awesome.

But the icons have fallen behind. When these were designed Google was in the ‘gradient phase’, everything had a shadow, and everything had a gradient.

Google has moved on and they are now using flatter colours. The Play icons have remained in the past, until now.

Google has finally updated their icons. Just for comparison, here are the older icons.

Oops: Samsung accidentally confirms the S7 Active

The Galaxy S7 was announced last month, and as we all know, it has regained its water and dust resistance. Because of that, we were a little fearful for the release of an S7 Active. It seems that it may be a thing.

In a recent update to the “Samsung Level” app, Samsung themselves accidentally confirmed it in the changelog section. They stated that among all of their other phones, the “Galaxy S7 Active” appeared for a bit of time. That leaves the question… What will this phone have that the S7 doesn’t?

They both will be waterproof and dust proof… It is expected that this phone may have a longer duration of submersion, and a bit more tolerance to dust. And as always the Actives, a slightly beefier battery and a more rugged design.

We will have to see.

Report: Google building Amazon Echo competitor

Everywhere, there has been a lot of great reviews and a lot of news about the Amazon Echo, the in-home voice assistant. According to The InformationGoogle is working on a new product that is similar to the Amazon Echo, but they have not offered any of thep [potential] product’s features, pricing, looks, release time, or anything. This little tidbit of information comes from a report from Nest, which was acquired by Google in 2014. It is part of a report that says that Nest has “stalled” innovation. Currently, they offer two major products, the Nest Protect, Nest Thermostat, and Nest Dropcam.

According to The Information, Nest has requested to be part of this project, but it appears that it was turned away by the team at Google leading this effort. Nest’s product line has slowed to an almost halt since the ownership of Google.  The report says that Tony Fadell’s oversight of the company can be to blame. He tends to apply constant pressure to rework features and make designs better.

Amazon Echo has been a huge success for Amazon, earning spectacular reviews and outstanding sales. This device is still getting new features and more advanced things through new firmware.

It is not likely, but it could be announced at this year’s I/O conference coming up in May.
